Explore the fundamentals of painting with acrylic. In this class students will learn about different types of acrylic paints, mediums, painting surfaces, brushes and tools. Each class will start with a mini lesson and demonstration, followed by step by step instruction to help you master new techniques. Art concepts covered will include methods of transferring images onto canvas; understanding color mixing and blending; developing brushstrokes; using value to create volume; and creating visual and tactile texture with paint and acrylic mediums. We will discuss supplies during our first class, but bring whatever acrylic paint and brushes you already have so we can go over them.
Supplies for class: (4) 11”x14” canvases; paint brushes; acrylic paint; disposable palettes and palette knife. Brands of paint I recommend are Master’s Touch and Liquitex Basics (economical), or Liquitex Heavy Body & Golden Heavy Body (most expensive). Suggested colors are: Cadmium Yellow Light; Cadmium Yellow Medium; Cadmium Red Medium; Quinacridone Magenta; Ultramarine Blue; Phthalo Blue (green shade); Phthalo Green (Blue Shade); Permanent Green Light and Titanium White.

Drawing and Painting Faces for the Beginner
Wednesdays 9am-12pmSession 2: 11/9- 12/14 (5 weeks)
Learn the fundamentals of drawing and painting faces in acrylics. We will begin the course with learning how to draw the face in proportion and apply shading techniques to create value and depth. Next we will learn how to transfer portraits onto canvas using a variety of methods, along with how to mix and paint realistic skin tones. Focus will be placed on painting lively and expressive portraits using a variety of brushstrokes and skin tone combinations. Weekly handouts and worksheets will aid in your ability to practice skills in and out of class. Bring a sketchbook, pencils and eraser to first class. We will discuss other supplies you will need then, but bring whatever acrylic paint and brushes you already have so we can go over them.
Supplies for class: Sketchbook (any size); 4B pencil; General’s Sketch & Wash pencil; eraser; (4) 11”x14” canvases or canvas board; paint brushes; acrylic paint; disposable palettes and palette knife. I recommend purchasing a Liquitex Basics 22 milliliters set that has the following colors included in it: Yellow Ocher, Naples Yellow, Cadmium Yellow Light, Cadmium Red Light, Cadmium Orange, Alizarin Crimson, Burnt Sienna, Raw Sienna, Burnt Umber, Phthalo Green, Cerulean Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Titanium White

Abstract art encompasses a wide range of approaches and techniques. So the question is: how do you get started? In this class we will look at how contemporary abstract artists find inspiration and what techniques they use to begin a painting. Classes will include short demonstrations and discussions based on abstract art concepts and techniques, along with hands on experience painting in a variety of styles. Lessons will be taught in steps so that you can learn and practice techniques while building confidence. The goal of this class is to loosen up and further develop your own expressive painting skills in a relaxed and enjoyable setting. You will have the freedom to paint along with the class or for more advanced students, work independently with individual critiques.
Supplies: Bring any size canvas or canvas boards, acrylic paint brushes in various sizes, a disposable paint palette pad, palette knife and whatever acrylic paint you may have to our first class.

This class is intended for students who want to achieve a more Impressionistic painting approach with acrylics. Subject matter will be based on bright and colorful scenes as we look at art from the Masters to modern day Impressionistic painters. Classes will begin with a short demonstration and discussion based on Impressionistic techniques such as brush strokes, color, and paint application. Emphasis will be placed on loosening up brushwork and building up layers of color to create depth and interest. Lessons will be taught in steps so that you can learn and practice techniques while building confidence with this style. You will have the freedom to paint along with the class, or for advanced students, work more independently with individual critiques.
Supplies: Please bring an 11” x 14” canvas or canvas board, acrylic paint brushes in various sizes, acrylic paint, disposable paint palette pad and a palette knife to our first class.
